The first thing to remember is that he may well be scared about being away from all he has ever known and may also be excited to be somewhere new! The key thing to do is to make sure that you keep the home a calm and settled environment. Try to confine him to a small space and away from lots of people and loud noises.

If you have children it is understandable that they will want to rush in and greet the new addition, but it is wise at this point to limit much contact with over excited children ideally until the next day when he may have calmed down a little and got to know the environment a little better. Ensure that you supervise the interactions and never leave children alone with a dog.

For the first night it is good to get your puppy into a routine from day one so don’t be lulled into putting him in bed with you just for this once. This is a tough habit to break once it has started so start as you mean to go on!
