When you open the lid or door, you will see the inner drum. The drum is facing forward in a front-loading washer that’s common in Europe. The drum is rotated around a horizontal axis, like a car tyre. The drum is equipped with many small holes that allow water to enter and exit. There are also paddles on the edges to move the clothes. Toploaders are more common in America and Asia. You open the lid and then drop the clothes from above into the drum. The drum rotates on a vertical axis, but it doesn’t move. The agitator paddle is located in the middle and turns the clothes in the water.
You can’t see a bigger drum, which is located outside the inner one. Its role is to hold water as the inner drum or agitator rotates (in toploaders). The outer drum must be completely watertight, unlike the inner drum. Otherwise you will have water on the floor.
