What is amigurumi?

Amigurumi is a Japanese word meaning knitted or crocheted (ami) and stuffed toy (nuigurumi). Amigurumi figures are usually small in size, crocheted with a lightweight yarn and often take the form of animals or food-related items. The common factor is an endearing little face which gives the amigurumi its signature cuteness.

Indeed, Amigurumi has become an important part of Japanese Kawaii Culture, kawaii referring to objects, actions and images that are deemed to be ‘cute’. With hundreds of amigurumi patterns and crochet kits available, it is easy to find a design you’ll love.

What do you need for amigurumi?

When beginning your first amigurumi project, you might prefer to choose from a range of crochet kits that will contain most of the things you will need to get started. A number of craft items are needed in order to bring your amigurumi to life.

A suitable yarn is the best starting point, with DK weight being the best choice for smaller designs whilst an aran weight yarn might work better for a larger toy. Either way, it is best to stick with 100% cotton yarn for optimum durability and stitch definition.

A crochet hook, embroidery thread and toy stuffing will turn your stitches into a fully formed amigurumi whilst the addition of safety eyes will ensure that your creation is as kawaii as can be!
