Colchester has just approved a controversial plan to build 75 new properties on a 3.99 hectare grassland in Old Heath. The project will require the removal of a woodland area on coastal protection land.
Disappointing News
The grassland and woodland region designated for construction was previously protected, so it’s unsurprising that Ward councillor Lee Scordis put a stop to the application. It was hailed as a strategic biodiversity area, but it was ultimately approved by a single vote.
Ward Councillors “Apoplectic”
Scordis and his fellow ward councillors are disappointed by the decision and have submitted a statement to express their feelings. They both felt the land should keep its designation. The woodland is an important habitat for badgers, and the proposed access road will put that biome at risk.

The new plan will require a school parking lot to be upgraded. Paul Davis, a fellow councillor, has called it a “preposterous scheme” that does little for the local community. The construction is ready to go, with a planning committee meeting scheduled for later in March.
