When something goes bump in the night

As you lie down to go to sleep at night do you hear things? I don’t mean the sounds of the street outside or a nearby Motorway, I mean the sounds of your house as it creaks and squeaks it’s way into the night. Admittedly this is probably worse if you live in a house that is old and getting on a bit. I had an elderly relation that explained to me once that she believed that her old house liked to settle in and get comfy before it went to sleep.

So don’t be too alarmed. One of the first things that you will hear is the roof beams creaking. This is easily explained. The eaves of the house are still made from wood. Although the wood is treated the thick planks that create the many triangles supporting the roof remember what it was like to be a tree. They expand, not a huge amount as the warmth of the day gets to them. As the night comes on they begin to cool and contract. So actually those sounds are the wood just doing its job.

The other sound could be from the boiler and the radiators. This might be something to be a bit more concerned about as if you hear a gurgling or a whistling there may be a problem. All you have to do is give a Boilers Cheltenham based company a call and they can come out and make sure the only noise they make is the gentle hum of the system working.
