A community group based in Newhaven, Edinburgh, has created an amazing 16-foot tall knitted Christmas tree as part of its efforts to tackle loneliness by bringing people together.
A Seedling of Inspiration Has Grown into Something Very Special
This crafty festive project began as a fundraising effort, as the community group members wanted to make the former primary school building they’re based in more accessible. However, before they knew it, three knitting groups had joined the project, and people of all ages were being brought together to take part in a wholesome shared activity.
The community group put out a call for volunteers to knit six-inch squares, and by the end of January 2024 they had received more than 100 from eager knitters. Knitted squares continued to flood in, with thousands eventually making it on to the tree.
An Intergenerational Global Effort
Proving that crafting spans the generations, everyone from school children to retirees have played a role in the creation of the Newhaven tree. The group have even received hand-knitted squares from people around the world, with donations to the project coming from as far away as Denmark, Finland and New Zealand.
Loneliness and isolation are unfortunately issues that are facing communities globally, and local community groups can provide much-welcomed lifelines for all ages.
